----------- The BatchReplacer project is a small Java application that is intended to replace sections of a text file with another text file. The core idea behind this utility is to apply a series of search / replace rules to a text file, and it is possible to define exactly what is replaced and the approximate location of each instance in the text file. The java program was designed to work using batch files, and is able to run through a directory of text files in no time flat at all. It's not very user friendly, but it gets the job done, and that's all that matters in my mind. The usage of this tool is simple, just select a file to replace, and specify the path of the new file which is going to replace the old one. The rules which are used to search and replace text in a file can be set at run time, and this way is much faster than iterating through a set of rules. An example of usage is going to show you how this tool works, but as you can see, it really is a very simple utility. The following screenshot is a simplified view of how the application works. Figure 1. BatchReplacer application Now, you probably already figured out that the file with the path 'C:\temp\replace_test.txt' is going to be replaced by the file with the path 'C:\temp ew_replace_test.txt'. Both of these files are located in the 'C:\temp' directory. The path of the file with the 'test.txt' extension is not the one you are going to replace, so let's say the path of the file to be replaced is 'C:\temp\old_test.txt'. BatchReplacer can only replace text, and is therefore unable to update a number of binary files, such as pictures, or ZIP files for instance. Also, the data of these files is not read by the tool. It can however change data inside of the ZIP files. Version 1.1 has been released today with the following features: Added support for CDATA elements. Added support for images (also known as attachments). Added support for mailto elements. Added support for tel, mailto and url elements. Added support for charset attributes.
